On 17 July 2025, Prof. Bruno Sarmento from the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), Porto, presented GENEGUT’s latest advances at the Controlled Release Society (CRS) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, USA. Welcoming over 1,200 attendees, the CRS meeting is a key global event for experts in drug delivery, biomaterials, and advanced therapeutic technologies.
Prof. Sarmento delivered the talk “Engineering Nanotherapeutics for Local Intestinal Delivery Responding to Oxidative Cues in the Gut Microenvironment”. His presentation highlighted GENEGUT’s progress on demonstrating proof of efficacy under diseased conditions and the efficacy of therapeutic targets using an optimised 3D multicellular model of ileal Crohn’s disease (CD). These results underline the project’s innovative contribution to developing targeted nanotherapeutic strategies for chronic inflammatory disorders of the gut.
The session generated strong interest from the drug-delivery community and led to valuable scientific exchanges. GENEGUT’s visibility at CRS 2025 reinforces the consortium’s role in pushing forward the frontiers of RNA-based, locally delivered therapies.
