From 09 to 12 September 2025, the 8th European Cyclodextrin Conference (EuroCD 2025) gathered 160 scientists from 27 countries at the Politecnico di Milano for four days of cutting-edge lectures, poster sessions and vibrant discussions. Among the many highlights, one stood out for the GENEGUT consortium: CarboHyde’s Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Milo Malanga, was honoured with the Thorsteinn Loftsson Award in Cyclodextrin Chemistry.
The newly established award recognises emerging talent in cyclodextrin research, with a particular attention to originality, interdisciplinarity and potential societal impact. Dr. Malanga’s pioneering work, ranging from sustainable cyclodextrin syntheses and scalable industrial processes to real-world applications, made him the most fitting first recipient. His keynote lecture, “Greener Rings: Sustainable Strategies for Cyclodextrin Derivatives”, underlined how cyclodextrin science can align efficiency with environmental responsibility.
Within GENEGUT, Milo’s work focuses on harnessing cyclodextrins to support safe and effective delivery of RNA-based therapies for Crohn’s disease. Using innovative biomaterials, including amphiphilic cyclodextrins, Milo’s team is helping to design nanoparticles that safely protect and deliver RNA therapies to the inflamed intestine. This work reflects the same qualities celebrated by the Loftsson Award: scientific originality, interdisciplinary innovation and a drive to deliver societal impact.
